Colorado Police Kill Naked Man Who Attacked Them with Machete

Mon, 10 December, 2012

Fatal police shootings in Aurora, Colorado have increased by one more as of Tuesday November 27th.  Apparently there was a man wielding a machete. He was naked, and unstable, and officers were forced to make the difficult call to fire at will. This incident leaves the tally at nine fatalities due to police decision in Aurora since 2008, according to the Denver Post.

Paramedics initially tried to reason with the man, however, they reported that he was very agitated, seemed unaware and unconcerned with being naked, and he retreated to a bedroom in the home. He came out shortly after with a machete in hand. The paramedics warned officers of the situation, stating the man was not in a right state of mind, and perhaps he even suffered some kind of dementia, even though he was only 55 years old. Sadly enough, it was the man’s family who called the authorities to their home. The man was acting “erratically” and he ultimately lunged at officers with two knives, reportedly wielding a machete, while nude. One of the officers decided to shoot for their protection.

After the paramedics accompanied the man’s family outside, officers attempted to reason with him, as he had barricaded himself in the aforementioned bedroom. Officers opted to kick in that bedroom door, after attempted reasoning did not work, maybe fearing he were to harm himself. At that point, the man lunged at the officers and they fired at him. It is curious as to whether or not kicking the door in was merited by the situation the officers faced, or not.

Regardless, the man’s knives did end up cutting and hurting the officers. The injuries were not serious, but evident bruising and cuts resulted. There will be a thorough investigation, released in a statement today from Arapahoe County’s District Attorney’s office, regarding the use of force, however the police department assures the community that the officers involved were all “veterans of the force”, and the Post reports one is a Sergeant. The man’s name has yet to be released.
