Mon, 10 December, 2012
In May 2011, a castle Rock woman was suspected of brutally killing her two children by asphyxiation. Last month, Kelli Murphy was convicted of two counts of murder. Critically, and straight to the point, prosecutors adamantly stated that “Kelli was a woman bent out of control… controlling her husband, her kids and her divorce,” according to the Denver Post. Apparently the killing was a result of her absolutely not sharing custody with anyone, and acting so violently as a result. Kelli Murphy will now be serving two life sentences without the option of parole.
Murphy’s defense team attempted to counter the charges by claiming that she did not kill her children, and it was an accidental occurrence, with ill-fated timing to say the least. The defense claimed that Murphy had passed out from drinking “an entire bottle of vodka, and taking too many pills,” according to the Post. Trying to gain an inch, the defense implied that Kelli’s mental state was not that of a normal person, and due to her distress from the divorce, she had attempted to commit suicide the night the tragedy happened. Kelli had no recollection of what happened that night. Defense attorney, Ara Ohanion, stated that Kelli awoke after her binge, found the children face down in their beds, and cut her own wrists.
The jury decided that blacked out or not, Kelli was responsible for the young children’s deaths. Apparently a full 12 hours had passed after her children had died, before Kelli called 911. In the call, she claimed she was attempting to commit suicide. This fact did not aid in her defense at all. Her defense attorney claimed that Kelli’s behavior was the culmination of her having been shunned by her family, having to deal with the fact her marriage was over, and facing judgment and scrutiny made her paranoid and unstable. In the 911 call, Murphy supposedly stated that she “hurt” her children and that she had to have an attorney, according to the Denver Post.
