100 Days of Heat-Colorado DUI Enforcement

Fri, 27 May, 2011

Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement agencies around Colorado are participating in Colorado’s “100 days of Heat” starting Memorial Day weekend. Law enforcement agencies will set up sobriety checkpoints and work overtime to enforce Colorado’s drunk driving laws. The program is called 100 Days of Heat, because 40-percent of last year’s fatal DUI crashes occurred in the hot summer months between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

According to the Gazette, Colorado Springs Police Department will be setting up roadblocks starting tonight, May 27, 2011. At these roadblocks law enforcement briefly stops all drivers at the checkpoint to determine if they have been drinking. If law enforcement has reason to believe that a driver has been drinking they may ask the driver to perform voluntary roadside maneuvers and/or chemical tests of the breath or blood. These tests are often accomplished on the scene in a specially-equipped van, called a BAT (breath alcohol testing) van.

Colorado State Patrol reports that it investigated 460 DUI crashes last year alone.
