There are millions of car acciden
ts in the United States every year. In 2005, approximately 6.4 million car accidents were reported, resulting in 42,636 fatalities. With more cars on the road, these numbers should continue to rise. Many of the most serious auto accidents involve semi-trucks, large commercials vehicles, 18-wheelers or “big rigs”. These accidents often involve the most serious injuries and fatalities.
Based on the size and weight of the trucks, the people most often injured in the semi-truck accidents are the people that are driving smaller vehicles such as motorcycles, cars and even SUVs. The effects of an 18-wheeler collision are devastating to the person injured and to their families and loved ones. These types of auto accidents can result in catastrophic bodily injury and even death. In 2005, The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration reported that there were 4,533 fatal large truck crashes in America. That accounts for over 12 fatal crashes a day. In many cases, the truck driver only suffers minor injuries, while the victims in the smaller vehicles often times suffer life-changing injuries and damages.
For the thousands of people killed in truck accidents, there are many more that suffer serious injury and lifelong pain and suffering as a result of 18-wheeler crashes. The costs of fatal traffic accidents total billions of dollars each year in property damage, productivity lost, and quality of life lost.
Truck accidents can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
- Driver error
- Driving under the influence
- Faulty vehicle or improper safety systems
- Overloaded or oversized trucks
- Aggressive or reckless driving
- Tired or fatigued drivers
- Driving in dangerous conditions such as ice, snow or fog.
When truck accidents do occur, they often occur on highways and interstates where truckers log millions of miles each year. On Colorado roads, where conditions are often less than ideal during the winter months, trucking accidents can be even more dangerous.
At the law offices of McDowell Laybourne & Rodemer, our Colorado truck accident lawyers fight for victims of semi-truck crashes to hold negligent trucking companies and their drivers liable for the damages they cause.
